The Power of the Longest Diagonal: A Bishop That Attacks and Defends
Good day, chess world!
This is the thirteenth game in Capablanca's own Chess Fundamentals and it is a ode to the fianchettoed bishop.
Playing Black against Morrison. Capablanca uses the bishop on the long diagonal to do two jobs: protect his own king and rake all the way down the board at White's king. This is the power of the fianchettoed bishop at its best.

Four exercises from the game
Try to solve each before you watch. Capablanca is Black here and wins, so every exercise asks for Black's move, the plan that made the long diagonal decisive. The answers are in the full game at the bottom, in the video, and in the website lesson linked below.
Exercise 1. Black to play (move 12). Which pawn thrust grabs kingside space and shoulders White's bishop off its best diagonal?

Exercise 2. Black to play (move 16). Which pawn break opens lines toward the white king and frees the fianchettoed bishop?

Exercise 3. Black to play (move 23). Which capture blasts open the long diagonal and wins material?

Exercise 4. Black to play (move 35). In the ending, which pawn capture opens lines with check and breaks through?
