About me
Hello! My name is Vo Hoang Quan, a FIDE Candidate Master (CM) from Vietnam, currently based in Geneva, Switzerland. I am currently a first-year student at IFM Business School in Geneva.
I have been involved in competitive chess from a young age. Throughout my junior career, I won multiple medals over the years at national, Southeast Asian, and Asian youth chess championships.
More recently, I won the Silver Medal in the Open U2000 section of the FIDE World Amateur Chess Championship 2025, scoring 7.5/9.
Beyond competing, I have also been actively involved in chess development and coaching. I am the Founder and President of Chess of Vietduc, the chess club of my former high school in Vietnam. Through the club, I have worked with high school students and personally coached several players from Grades 10 to 12 who later won medals at city-level chess competitions.
I am fluent in English and offer private chess lessons in English, both online and in person in Geneva.
Having experienced chess as a competitive player, club organizer, and coach, I understand both the technical and psychological challenges players face as they develop. My coaching focuses not only on finding stronger moves, but also on improving calculation, positional understanding, decision-making, confidence, and practical tournament skills.
I welcome children, teenagers, and adults who want to improve their chess in a structured and practical way.

Playing experience
I have played competitive chess from a young age and have participated in tournaments at national, Southeast Asian, Asian, and international levels.
Throughout my junior career, I won multiple medals over the years at national, Southeast Asian, and Asian youth chess championships. These experiences gave me early exposure to strong competitive environments and helped shape my understanding of tournament preparation, psychological pressure, and long-term player development.
As a senior player, one of my major international achievements was becoming the Silver Medalist at the FIDE World Amateur Chess Championship 2025 – Open U2000, where I scored 7.5/9.
My competitive background allows me to help students with both chess knowledge and practical tournament skills, including calculation, positional decision-making, opening preparation, time management, and playing under pressure.

Teaching experience
I am the Founder and President of Chess of Vietduc, the chess club of my former high school in Vietnam.
Through the club, I have been involved in developing chess activities, supporting younger players, and creating a more structured environment for students interested in competitive chess.
I have also personally coached several high school students from Grades 10 to 12, helping them improve their practical playing skills and prepare for competitions. Some of these students went on to win medals at city-level chess championships.
This experience has helped me understand how to work with young players at different levels, identify weaknesses in their games, and adapt training to their individual needs.
I can work with beginners who want to build a solid foundation, intermediate players who want to progress more systematically, and competitive players preparing for tournaments.
Lessons are available in English, both online and face-to-face in Geneva.

My coaching focuses particularly on game analysis, calculation, tactical vision, positional understanding, practical decision-making, and tournament preparation.
I especially enjoy analyzing students' own games because they reveal much more than individual mistakes. They show how a player thinks, evaluates positions, selects candidate moves, and manages time.
By identifying recurring patterns in these decisions, we can work on the real causes of mistakes rather than simply memorizing computer recommendations.

Teaching methodology
Teaching methodology
Every student is different, so I prefer a personalized approach rather than using the same training program for everyone.
We normally begin by analyzing several of your recent games. This allows me to identify your main strengths and weaknesses in areas such as calculation, tactics, positional play, openings, endgames, and time management.
From there, we build a training plan based on your level and goals.
During lessons, I encourage students to explain their thinking before I give the answer. Instead of only asking “What is the best move?”, we also examine “What were you thinking?”, “Which candidate moves did you consider?”, and “Why did you make this decision?”
This helps improve not only chess knowledge, but the student's entire decision-making process.
Depending on your needs, lessons can include game analysis, calculation exercises, positional training, endgames, opening preparation, training games, and tournament preparation.
My ultimate goal is simple: to help you understand chess better and make stronger decisions independently over the board.
