Stuck between 1000 and 1600? That plateau is one of the most frustrating in chess and one of the most fixable.
I'm CM Emanuel Vaglio (FIDE 2296), a chess coach with 8+ years of teaching experience. I grew up trained by my father, IM Jaime Vaglio, a two-time Costa Rican national champion. That foundation gave me something most coaches can't offer: a deep understanding of what separates good players from great ones at every level.
I've helped dozens of intermediate players stop repeating the same mistakes, build a reliable opening repertoire, and convert winning positions they used to throw away. My approach is direct and structured — no generic advice, no wasted sessions.
If you're serious about improving, I have a few spots open. Let's get to work.

Teaching experience
8+ years coaching players from complete beginners to advanced competitors online and in-person. My students in the 1000–1600 range consistently improve by focusing on three things: game analysis, tactical pattern recognition, and avoiding the structural mistakes that keep most intermediate players stuck.
Other experiences
In addition to one-on-one coaching, I have conducted group lessons, workshops, and online courses. I have successfully taught students from diverse backgrounds and age groups, building strong rapport and effective communication with each one.

Teaching methodology
Every session is built around your games not a generic curriculum. Here's what we focus on:
• Game analysis: I review your recent games before each session and identify the 2–3 patterns costing you the most points.
• Tactical sharpness: Targeted puzzles based on your specific weak spots, not random drill sets.
• Opening repertoire: A solid, manageable repertoire matched to your style, not memorization overload.
• Endgame fundamentals: The phase most 1000–1600 players neglect, and the fastest way to convert more wins.
Progress is measurable. Most students see clear improvement in their game quality within 4–6 sessions.
